Nespresso vs Keurig
Keurig Vs Nespresso - Who makes the best pod coffee brewer?
They are convenient, they are fast and they are clean but which one will better suit your taste. Millions of people all of the world use these now and they have become more environmentally friendly.
Read on to find out what will be best for you.
The issue with pod machines is that they’ve become so incredibly popular that there seems to be a new pod machine hitting the market every day. While that might seem like it’s good news for the consumer, if you are trying to decide which brand and model to purchase, it can make things different.
When an Amazon search for a pod coffee brewer returns thousands of results, figuring out which coffee maker is the best can seem like an impossible task.
With price tags ranging anywhere from twenty bucks to a thousand dollars, understanding how much you should pay for one of these gadgets is equally confusing which is why I’ve put together this guide to help you make your choice.
The number one tip I will give you when you are buying a pod coffee machine brewer is this: Avoid purchasing cheap models from brands you’ve never heard of
Yes, it’s a cliché but you know it makes sense. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. A pod coffee machine that costs $30 is never going to give you a good cup of coffee. Best case scenario it will work for a few weeks or maybe even months brewing substandard coffee until one of its cheap parts wear out and you chuck it in the bin because there was no warranty.
Save yourself the hassle, buy the quality model and then you’ll only have to buy it once.
The two most popular coffee pod appliances are Keurig and Nespresso machines. These manufacturers are well established and the appliances are used by millions of people.
Both brands offer a wide variety of machines with different levels of functionality and the battle of Nespresso vs Keurig has been going on for years now as each company fights to dominate the coffee pod market.
Who or what is Keurig?
Keurig Dr. Pepper is one of America’s biggest manufacturer of coffee, coffee-related equipment, and several other beverages. It’s a market leader for pod coffee machines with a massive range of almost 60 models.
Amongst these are single-serving machines, dedicated espresso machines, and larger multi-function coffee makers that combine a pod brewer with other functions such as grinding and pressure brewing. A larger model machine generally has a bigger water tank and allows you to make large quantities of beverages without having to top up the water.
Keurig makes several commercial coffee machines designed to make hundreds of drinks per day. As far as coffee pod machine manufacturers, this company has the most varied range of products on the US market.
They have a huge range of their own brand K-Pods which will make practically every variant of coffee, tea and hot chocolate that you can dream of.
Most Keurig machines will also operate with pods from other manufacturers except Nespresso pods as these are designed only to work in Nespresso machines. Keurig offers a refillable filter which users can use with their own favorite coffee grounds.
What is Nespresso?
Nespresso is to Europe as Keurig is to the United States. The company headquarters is in Switzerland and the brand is owned by food and beverage mega-company Nestlé.
Nespresso was the first pod machine maker to become popular in Europe, opening their first store in Paris in 2000. With the help of some great advertisements featuring George Clooney, Nespresso began to conquer the US market about ten years ago.
Their machines are designed for home rather than commercial use and the brand is fast becoming a household name across America. As sales increase, the battle of Keurig vs Nespresso continues!
The company has been criticized for designing machines that will only operate with Nespresso pods but in recent years, several coffee manufacturers have begun making pods which are compatible with Nespresso machines. This has improved the flexibility of these appliances but you still have a lot less choice than with a Keurig machine.
That said, Nespresso pods are known to be of a higher quality than many other brands so many Nespresso fans have no problem with being limited to just one brand. The company offers a range of subscription and delivery options so that you’ll never miss out on your favorite cup of coffee.
Which brand is better, Keurig or Nespresso?
Well, the answer to that question depends on a few variables. What kind of coffee do you like to drink? Plain espresso? Latte, mocha or cappuccino? How many people will use your machine? Is it just you or will you need to make coffee for your large family several times a day?
If this machine will serve lots of different people, are they all expresso drinkers or will each one people have their own preference? All of these are important questions to take into consideration when you are choosing the best pod coffee maker for your needs.
I’ve looked at serving sizes, multiple servings, speed of brew and value for money to give you a clear comparison between the machines being offered by Keurig vs Nespresso machines. I also compare the appearance of Keurig and Nespresso machines because having something in your kitchen that looks good, and makes great coffee too is always a bonus.
And let’s not forget the capsules. Nespresso pods are known for their high quality but if you buy one of their machines, you are tied to that one brand. By comparison, Keurig has a much larger range of coffees, teas, and other beverages. They work with high street coffee retailers and smaller brands to make every coffee experience available to their customers.
What is the best budget single-serving coffee machine?
Capsule coffee machines don’t need to cost an arm and a leg and there are a variety of great choices in the budget price category. One of my favorites of these is this one:
Keurig K-Mini Basic Coffee maker
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GV2BHKC/ref=twister_B07WML61ZY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 This gorgeous little machine comes in Matt Black, Studio Gray and in the one that we trialed, a very attractive aqua shade called ‘Oasis’ which had a cute and retro feel.
In the battle between Keurig and Nespresso, Keurig is definitely winning in the entry-level range. We love that even for budget customers, they are offering some beautifully designed appliances. However, it’s worth noting that at the time of review, Keurig is charging more for the colored Oasis model.
The K-Mini is hugely popular with almost 800 reviews on the Amazon site and an average star rating of 4.1. It’s compact but sturdily built and because the water reservoir is small, it heats up fast. You can brew up a hot cup of coffee in less than two minutes.
This compact Keurig brewer is ideal for people living in small spaces or for a college dorm room or even a motor home or boat. The downside of its size is that you’ll need to refill the reservoir after each cup.
We tried out the machine with Starbucks Caffé Verona Coffee in K-Pods. If you are a fan of Starbucks, you’ll be delighted to see the variety of Starbucks blends available in K-Cup capsules.
- Simple but attractive design
- Economically priced
- Travel Mug Friendly (You can remove the drip tray to fit a tall mug)
- Energy efficient
- Compact – less than 5 inches in width
- The reservoir needs to be filled after every use
- Does Nespresso make a budget-priced single-serving machine?
Now, here is the disappointing news. No! These appliances start at a much higher price point and there is no Nespresso machine on the market to rival the Keurig K-Mini. This means that in this category, Keurig is the unchallenged winner!
Breville-Nespresso Vertuo vs Keurig K-Cafe Single Serve
In this challenge, I compare one of the most popular single-serving coffee makers from each manufacturer. That’s the Breville-Nespresso USA Vertuo Coffee and Espresso machine https://www.amazon.com/Nespresso-Vertuo-Espresso-Machine-Breville/dp/B01MZCQ4UM/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=5MX75QLPRE6Y&keywords=breville+nespresso+vertuo&qid=1569893625&sprefix=breville+nespresso+v%2Caps%2C209&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMFdDMlpaMEo4NFlPJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjE0MjI1M0Y2SjhVSzdNSVlGNCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjc2MzMyM0tEWE1MOEFYUEkxUyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= vs Keurig’s K-Cafe Single Serve Coffee maker https://www.amazon.com/Keurig-K-Cafe-Single-Serve-Cappuccino-Dishwasher/dp/B07C1XC3GF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=23QS5QP7GQF6J&keywords=keurig+espresso+maker&qid=1569896476&s=home-garden&sprefix=keurig+espresso+maker%2Cgarden%2C206&sr=1-1
Let’s start with the Nespresso. This machine can make espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, mochas and more.
The Vertuo can only be used with Nespresso pods and it has a barcode system which reads the capsule and recognizes the type of drink you’re making. This is smart technology but it’s not good news if you want to use pods from another brand.
The Vertuo looks pretty plain and unassuming in matt black plastic with a chrome water tank and removable drip tray. I can’t say its appearance will rock your world, but will probably blend into most kitchen decor schemes. It comes in a variety of other colors including red, glossy black, titan and chrome. Prices vary for these options.
The pod brewer can make coffee in any of five serving sizes ranging from a single espresso (1.35oz) to an Alto coffee (14oz). It’s compatible with 2 capsule sizes, small which you’d use for an espresso and large which is ideal for an Alto coffee.
The tank will hold up to 40oz and the waste container can fit 13 spent capsules. The Breville-Nespresso Vertuo will also make hot and cold milk froth so if you want more than a plain espresso, no problem!
With a 15 second warm-up time, the Nespresso machine is fast, giving us a great cup of hot coffee in just over one minute. We had no complaints about any of the serving sizes and we were very impressed with the taste and aroma of the coffee. The machine came with a welcome pack of 12 Vertuo capsules and this was a great way to sample a variety of different blends.
If you already have a compatible machine and you’d like to try out the Nespresso Vertuoline of best-selling coffees, you can get a sample pack of 30 capsules – 10 Odaacio, 10 Stormio, and 10 Melozio: https://www.amazon.com/Nespresso-Vertuoline-Seller-Assortment-Count/dp/B01N05APQY/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1NEZCYHYGKZNN&keywords=nespresso+vertuoline&qid=1569901486&sprefix=nespresso+ver%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-4
I like Nespresso’s recycling policy for pods. As these are now made of aluminum, the used pods are 100% recyclable We’re all trying to use less plastic these days so it’s good to see that Nespresso are on board. Nespresso Vertuoline also makes reusable capsules which you can fill with your own coffee grounds.
The Breville-Nespresso USA Vertuo Coffee and Espresso Machine is available from Amazon. Prices vary but at the time of review, this appliance was priced at mid-range.
- Choice of up to five serving sizes
- Froths hot and cold milk
- Brews coffee fast
- Nespresso capsules make great tasting coffee
- Bestselling appliance with great reviews
- Large water tank and waste container
- Recyclable coffee pods
- Two-year warranty
- There’s nothing special about the appearance of this coffee maker
The Keurig K-Cafe Single Serve Pod Coffee Maker
The Keurig K-Cafe Single-Serve pod coffee maker is another mid-range capsule brewer. It is very basic in appearance with a matte black and chrome design. But don’t be fooled by appearance. This is more than your regular run-of-the-mill pod machine.
Keurig machines are super-compatible and can be used with a huge range of beverage capsules which include coffees, teas, hot chocolate, and even soup! This flexibility means that you have very few limitations on what you can make. Except for Nespresso capsules – you can’t use those!
The K-cafe has a super-sized water reservoir holding up to 60 oz and it can brew serving sizes of 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz. It also has a superb milk frother which works hot and cold and on plant milk as well as dairy milk.
On top of that, all the parts of this machine are dishwasher safe so it’s a breeze to clean. We loved the simplicity and ease of use of the K-Cafe. It takes less than 2 minutes to put it all together and the design is very intuitive.
We tried out the frother on half fat dairy milk and almond milk. It did an excellent job on both. You can also use this as a steamer if froth is not your thing. We tested the machine with K-cup Green Mountain Dark Magic coffee and with Starbucks Sumatra single-origin coffee. On both blends, the taste was well balanced and satisfying.
The K-Cafe is also whisper quiet and although at the time of review it was slightly more expensive than the Nespresso, you’ll save that money in a couple of months on cheaper pods.
You can also use this machine with a My K-Cup reusable coffee filter which you can fill up with your own coffee grounds – a great option for people who want to cut down on waste and plastic packaging.
The Keurig K-Cafe Single Serve Coffee Machine is available from Amazon where it has close to 2,000 customer reviews. The average customer rating is 4.4 stars!
- Four serving sizes
- Easy and fuss-free experience
- Fantastic milk frother which works on plant milk too
- Large water reservoir
- You can use this machine with a very large range of coffee capsules
- Whisper-quiet operation
- Reusable coffee filters are available
- The design is quite basic
- Shorter 1-year warranty
It’s hard to pick a winner in this challenge because both the machines we tested had a lot to offer. The Keurig’s flexibility and larger range of compatible pods will save you money in the long run BUT the Nespresso capsules have a better taste and the company offers some cost-effective and convenient delivery options.
One area where the Nespresso wins out is on its warranty and longevity. Consumer reviews suggest that Nespresso machines last longer than Keurig. From examining the two appliances, it does seem that the Nespresso model is constructed of a heavier and more sturdy-feeling plastic. It also has twice the warranty of the Keurig, suggesting that Nespresso is more confident about standing behind its brand.
