What Is Similar With The K50 And The K200?
Water Brewing Temperature
Both coffee makers manage to heat water to 192 degrees Fahrenheit, although the type of cup you use can affect coffee temperature. For instance, ceramic mugs always cool drinks faster so your coffee won’t be as hot if you use one.
Keep in mind that you cannot change the temperature of the coffee. If you want something hotter, colder or you want to control water temperature, you need a different machine.
Both coffee makers take over 1 minute to brew a cup of coffee. This means they are among the slow Keurig machines. For faster brewing, you need to look at other models, as Keurig’s newest models brew faster. However, this doesn’t mean the old Keurig models are very slow – the brewing time for both the K50 and the K200 is 90 seconds, which is still faster than many machines on the market.
In order to extend the life of your Keurig appliances, you have to descale them on a regular basis. This is particularly important if you live in an area with hard water because of limescale build-up. Alternatively, you can invest in a water filter that can get rid of the problem. These machines do not come with a water filter so you have to buy one separately.
Since both coffee makers are on the affordable side, they are a little noisier than higher-end models. However, the noise is not that bad. If they get too loud, you should check the needle, as clogging can cause the machines to be louder than usual.
Main Differences Between The K50 And K200
The K200 offers more features than the K50. This brings in some important differences to consider, like:
Both coffee makers use K-pods by Keurig and are only compatible with them. The machines have an automatic scanner that detects pod compatibility so you cannot use pods from other brands.
The K50 model allows you to brew 3 different sizes: 6, 8, and 10 ounces. You can only use K-cups with this model. On the other hand, with the K200 you can use K-cups but also the K-carafe. In addition, the K200 is compatible with more pod options and brew sizes. When you want variety in the pods you use, the K200 is a better choice.
Water Tank Capacity
The water tank of the K50 is larger than the one of the K200 model. However, the difference is not that noticeable. The first model has a 48 ounces water reservoir while the latter features a 40 ounce one. This means you get an extra cup of coffee with the K50.
From the moment you look at the control panel of these machines, you realize that they are very different. The K50 has a classic design and a basic control panel with have buttons. This can be a plus for you because it makes brewing easy and simple.
In contrast, the K200 features a touch display that gives you strength control. This is a feature loved by many coffee drinkers who like to be able to adjust coffee strength throughout the day. The display can be configured to some extent and will offer alerts about what happens during the brewing process.
You cannot manipulate brewing temperature with any of these two machines. This is a feature that is only available with Keurig newest generations.
The K200 features more settings that you can modify. This means you have more control and the drink you make can be customized based on your preferences. You can set the language used, coffee strength, and you receive alerts whenever something goes wrong. The coffee maker even has a special setting that allows it to work at a high altitude. This is not present in the K50.
When it comes to reliability, I find the K200 to be the best choice. With the K50 you can run into performance issues and it is hard to determine what caused them. Since the K200 has alerts that let you know when something is wrong, it is easier to fix the problem and make the machine operate properly.
The design of the K50 is dated but it is a very simple entry-level coffee maker. It is a little chunky when compared to the K200 and a little larger, although not by much. The weight is very similar but what will put you off is the more classic overall design of the K50 when compared with the K200. The Keurig K200 also gives you access to more color customization options.
An Auto Off feature is present in the K50 and not in the K200. This is very beneficial when you want to save electricity because the machine automatically shuts down when you’re not brewing coffee. This happens automatically after 90 seconds. With the Keurig K200, you need to manually turn off the coffee maker after you are done.
What Coffee Drinks Can You Make With The K50 And The K200?
Both machines heat up water fast and can be used to make other drinks except coffee, like hot chocolate, hot cocoa, and tea. Due to the K-pod range, you can choose out of various drinks including popular single serve beverages, such as tea, decaf coffee, green tea, and even specialty drinks.
The big difference between the two coffee makers is that with the K200 you can select coffee strength. This is not possible with the K50.
With both models, you can buy a reusable cup so you can use your preferred ground coffee if you need some versatility.
The Keurig K200 and the K50 are both easy to clean.
The K200 features a reservoir at the back so it is also stylish and sleek. Different color options are available so you can easily find something that matches the shades used in the interior design of your kitchen.
K200 is better for those who have limited counter space since the reservoir is smaller than with other coffee makers. The 40 ounces water tank is enough for brewing 2 cups of coffee in one go.
Some Extra Facts To Consider
Given the included features, I think the price of the Keurig K200 is fair. You get a clear and nice digital display and the language can be changed to English, French or Spanish.
Set up is fast with both machines.
Keurig K50 Vs K200 – Which One Should You Buy?
When comparing the two, the Keurig K200 does have an edge over the K50, even if the water reservoir is smaller and the price tag is higher. The K200’s design is sleeker, more sustainable, and the machine is more compact. Furthermore, there are more color options available for this model, not just the standard black or white available for the K50. You can choose from – plum gray, orange, red, sandy pearl, and turquoise. The design ethic of the K50 is more classic and basic.
