best coffee grinder

It could be argued that a coffee grinder is an optional addition to your kitchen. With the ready availability of good quality ground coffee, there’s a case for just not bothering to grind your own beans or so you might think. And yet, the number of grinders on the market continues to increase as more and more people embrace home grinding.

There’s a very good reason for this! When it’s properly done, fresh ground coffee truly makes the most beautifully balanced, aromatic and satisfying cup of coffee. Sure, it might add an extra few minutes to your coffee routine but Boy do you reap the rewards!

Why do I need a Coffee Grinder?

I’ll be honest. I don’t grind fresh coffee beans every single day of the week. Like most people, I often have to rush in the morning time but I keep a supply of recently ground coffee at home.

Fresh coffee will keep well in an airtight container for about one week but for the very best flavor, it is best consumed as soon after grinding as possible. There is no cup of coffee that I enjoy better than my Saturday morning just ground brew and anybody who owns a burr grinder will assure you that it’s an extra step that is well worth taking.

Another big advantage of owning a grinder is that you can create the best grind consistency for the method you use for
If you use an espresso machine then you’ll need fine ground coffee for best results while Cold Brew or French Press coffee will require a much coarser blend. Having your own grinder means that you can custom grind your favorite beans to just about any consistency and enjoy the freshest and most aromatic coffee at home whenever you wish!

If you’re reading this article you are probably here because you want to find the best coffee grinder for your needs. Maybe it’s your first one or perhaps a replacement.

Either way, I hope you’ll find this guide useful. I have reviewed what I believe are the very best coffee grinders for home use. To cover all bases, I’ve included both manual and electric burr coffee bean grinders.

There are two main ways of grinding coffee, Burr grinding and Blade grinding. If you’re new to the grinding game, you might wonder which is best, and that’s why I’ve included a short introduction to each type of grinder.

What is a Burr Coffee Grinder?

Strictly speaking, blade grinding is cutting rather than grinding and as a result, the coffee grounds that this process delivers are almost always unevenly ground and inconsistent in flavor. Rather than crushing the coffee beans, the blades spin to chop and slice them.

Using a blade makes it much more difficult to control the particle size and generally the final product is a mixture of coarse, extra coarse and fine particles.

Another issue with blade grinders is the heat generated by the movement of the blades. While the burr grinder respects the integrity of the bean, grinding and massaging out the oil and flavor into a balanced and aromatic final product, the blade grinder chops and hacks frantically and unevenly.

The heat and aggressive friction of the chopping action are never good for the final quality of the grind. Even if you start off with the best beans that money can buy, you’ll end up with a combination of over-extracted and under-extracted coffee and a bitter, salty or sour brew, lacking in flavor and without any depth.

Choosing the Best Burr Grind Coffee Grinder

If you’ve decided that a burr grinder is a way to go, there are several factors that will influence your choice of appliance. As always, your budget will play a key part in this decision but the good news is, there are some really great grinder options in every price category.

We’ve had the opportunity to try out and evaluate a huge range of these tools. Read on to find out which is the best coffee grinder for your cup of Joe.

The Best Way to Clean a Burr Coffee Grinder

Coffee oil residue eventually does build up on the interior of most machines and many people puzzle over the best way to remove it.

There’s a simple but smart solution. The best way to get rid of this is to run a cup of dry white rice through your machine. The absorbent rice grains will pick up the oil residue and remove it quickly, safely and without the need for any aggressive chemicals and detergents!

Choosing the Best Blade Grinder?

If you are considering buying a blade grinder, my sincere advice is to think again. With such a great variety of burr grinders on the market now, there’s no need to resort to blades. To be perfectly honest, using a blade grinder is the best way to destroy good quality beans.

Here at DoubleEspressoToGo, we don’t condone cruelty to coffee and that’s why you won’t find any blade grinders on our list! If you’re gonna do something, you may as well just do it right the first time.

A burr beats a blade hands down in every coffee challenge so if you want the very best cup of Joe, this is the way to go.

Manual Burr Coffee Grinders

Electric Burr Grinders are popular for their speed and convenience but a hand-operated grinder will do the same job – just slower. Manual grinders are popular with travelers, coffee-loving campers, boat owners and outdoor adventurers. Since these little tools are lightweight, portable and don’t need any power, you can take them anywhere and enjoy the unparalleled taste of freshly ground coffee no matter where you are.

Because you don’t need to hook them up to a plug socket there are no restrictions on where you can use these. They don’t require any power and even if you are on top of a mountain, miles from civilization you can grind beans to your heart’s desire.

The Best Manual Burr Grinder

  • Lightweight and Portable – ideal for travel
  • Budget-friendly – You can pick this up for less than $20!
  • Stainless Steel construction is built to last for generations
  • Easy to assemble and disassemble for cleaning and storage
  • Ceramic blades last five times as long as steel blades
  • 18 settings
  • Much quieter than an electric grinder
  • Strangely satisfying to use!

  • Won’t grind the very fine particles required for Espresso, Moka Pot or Turkish coffee
  • Has to be cranked by hand

18 settings, it allows you to grind coffee on the go and will produce perfect grinder coffee for Espresso, percolator, cold brew and French press.

An adjustable selector allows you to easily adjust the coarseness of your grind and the stainless steel construction of the unit is designed and built to last a lifetime. Perfect for use at home on your boat or in your motorhome, the grinder is operated by cranking the handle by hand.

How easy is it to use the Müeller Manual Coffee Grinder?

This hand grinder is comprised of 5 separate pieces and it can be easily assembled and disassembled for storage, transport or cleaning.

You can change the grind setting by adjusting the distance between the burrs with the grind adjustment brew. The hopper holds about 1/3 of a cup of coffee beans and will produce about 4 level tablespoons of coarse ground coffee – about enough for an 8 cup French press cafetière.

How’s the coffee?

This grinder does a stellar job on medium to coarse ground settings but it isn’t really up to the task of very fine consistencies for espresso machines, Moka pot or Turkish coffee. However, if you are camping or boating, coarse ground methods are often more convenient and the Müeller will happily deliver coffee of an ideal coarseness for French press, Aeropress, Cold Brew, and Drip coffee.

Cleaning the Müeller Coffee Grinder

For routine cleaning, all you need to do is rinse the hopper lid and handle well in water. After extensive use, you may find a build-up of oils inside the unit. In this case, you can disassemble the grinder and wash the individual parts in warm soapy water. Allow to dry naturally or use a soft dry cloth. Ensure that all parts have dried thoroughly before putting the grinder back together.

How is the Coffee?

The coffee is good! Okay, you don’t have the same range as you do with the electric grinders but 18 settings are more than enough to cover the majority of tastes.
